Do you have a list of people you feel that you just absolutely NEED to meet? A list of those folks who would really find value in your services? If not, then you should definitely start working on one – TODAY.

This biggest missed opportunity when networking is not knowing exactly WHO you need to meet. What often happens (and this is what YOU want to avoid) goes something like this:

Me: “So, who would be a good connection for you? Who would you like to meet?”

Them: “I want to meet anybody who . . .”

Me: “I don’t know Anybody.”

OR

Me: “So, who would be a good connection for you? Who would you like to meet?”

Them: “I’d like to talk to somebody who . . ..”

Me: “I don’t know Somebody.”

You know the adage, “Ask and you shall receive.” Well, it can’t happen if you don’t ask specifically for what you want. Why? Because there are no people named “Anybody or Somebody or Everybody.” If you ask for them, you are bound to end up with connections to “Nobody.”

Let’s say you are looking for an introduction to the partner or principal at a local law firm, or you want to meet the human resource manager at a specific company. (If you know the exact name of the person – even better!) Then I might respond, “Well, I may not know either of them, but I do know an attorney who has an office in the same town, or an employee in the HR manager’s company. Would that be of interest to you?”

The obvious answer is “Yes!”

What you need to do is ask specifically, so the other person can mentally zero in on their contacts on your behalf.
